Hello Aaron Newman,
Reading your post about Marvin Gaye was very informative to me. I liked everything you talked about. I really enjoyed how you explained they music of Marvin Gaye made you feel. I understood everything you were talking about. I found it interesting how you talked about the technology and how it can make you or break you. It is very good how you learned you can not always rely on the computers. There are many other factors in recording music. You brought that to my attention very well.  After reading your post I learned a lot about Marvin Gaye, it was very enjoyable to read. Thank you.

Independent Research Entry Dr. Dre

Dr.Dre

Kevin Ortiz

Dr.Dre is not the typical performer/Producer/businessman. Un like most rappers and producers money is not his main goal. He puts others in front of himself, and even his own album Detox.
Dre spoke a little about Detox in 2002; just saying it was a concept and was going to be his last album. We heard more about Detox in 2004. Dre was planning on dropping his final album in fall of 2005. As we all know this was not the case.
He started putting his album on the back burner the same time he started talking about the release of it. He took most of 2002 producing a well known album “Get Rich Or Die Trying” for rapper 50 cent. Keeping the status of Detox in the ruff draft stage.
Putting others in front of himself and his own album he put his Detox album on hold to produce 50 cents “before I self destruct” released November 16th 2009.
Another big album Dre produced instead of putting himself in front of anyone was Eminem’s album “relapse” he produced 19 of the 20 tracks on his album. This album was released may 19th 2009.
The albums and artistes I mentioned are just a small peace of his legend in production. This is what makes Dre not only good not only great but legendary. His name will live not only threw his music and his production but threw his helping hand he gave performers to make chart topping hits.
Listening to his music shows me how influential he was because he’s beats are amazing. His mixing and recording is so experienced everything is perfect.  His flow is so smooth and lyrics are always from the heart. Overall Dr. Dre is an amazing artist, engineer, and performer. I am still waiting for Detox to come and along with half the world. Hopefully the most anticipated album will not fail us. If it was not for Dr. Dre their would be no Eminem, 50 Cent, long with many other performers and artists.

Electronic Music Innovations

Electronic Music Innovations

The composer and Technical innovator for electronic music that I am picking to write about is M.I.A. Her innovation on electric music was very big. Although she was making music for a while know she just started to get big about 3 years ago in the united stated. Originally from Mitcham, South London in the United Kingdom her music spread to the united stated with much help from a movie called pineapple express. Her song paper plains blow up after being used for the Pineapple Express movie taller. Her impact on the pop and electric music genre was very big. Bringing hip hop, alternative dance, electronic, world, alternative, and avant garde combinations is amazing. Artists all over from all different genres cover her electronic beats. Including little Wayne and Jay Z with the beat Airplanes. The characteristics of her music are all over the place. She had her up beat dance music that will make you move. She likes very fast electronic music beats. Her lyrics are very witty. She talks about all different aspects of life. She talks about the good life and talks about the bad life. Sometimes she combined both fiction and reality. The impression she has had on me was a good one.  I love her beats and her vocals. She is talking about American things that everyone can relate to but with her London accent that is what makes the song. I have listened to a lot of her mainstream pop music that incorporates electronic music very well. Also some of her mix tapes are done very good, some of them do not even sound like a mix tape. Some of them can be albums. She was influenced by a lot of electronic music and put her own spin on things. Now she is inspiring a lot of people with her sound.

Electronic Music entry

The music and image of Kraftwerk. The music of Kraftwerk was very electronic. He was making the blueprint for the start of electronic music. The group’s music was described as robot pop. The music was rhythmic threw electric means. The 1974 album Autobahn was the first Kraftwerk to be released in the United States. This album, Autobahn was an international smash. With this album they reached the upper rungs of the pop chart. In 1975 Kraftwerk resurfaced with Radio Activity. Radio activity was a concept album exploring the theme of radio communication. The next year came Trains Travel and 1978 brought along The Man Machine. After this album they disappeared, re-entering into the music world in 1981 with Computer world. Some characteristics of Kraftwerks music that makes them one of the most influential bands in the electric pop music are that fact that they started the electrical music sensation. Their albums were all concepts. Their Autobahn is about the road and driving on the world famous Highway, the Autobahn. Another example is their album Trans Europe express. The Trans Europe Express is about train travel and European connectivity. Kraftwerk has influenced many bands, Being the pioneers of electrical music they hit the world with a sound know one had ever heard before. The struck the ears of many bands. On of the bands that have taken a lot of inspiration from Kraftwerk was Karlheinz Stockhausen. Also another band that embraced this new sound was Elektric Music. The impression I got from listening to Kraftwerk was a fun heart pumping emotion. I do not listen to electronic music that often but I found it very fun to listen to when I was doing my homework. It amazed me that someone would be able to create all this music and have it all be electric. I enjoyed listening to Kraftwerk.

Comment on Charles Corbett post.

Comment on Charles Corbett post. The Velvet Underground & Nico Your post on The Velvet Underground and Nico was very well written. I can tell you understood the information you read. I agreed with the bands you have compared The Velvet Underground and Nico too.The way you explained their music and the darkness of it was very agreeable. I like how you explained where all of their ideas came from and how the darkness was evened out by the inspiration of the pop music brought to them by their producer Andy Warhol. I understand where you are coming from when you say the music was rarely muddy but the times it was muddy it was for a reason and it made the sound they were looking for. The muddiness came from the hardware they were using and their subs, it did not come from them personally playing and i think that is what you meant by that. I really enjoyed reading your blog. Thank you.

What’s Going On.

What’s Going On.

Before the album What’s Going On Marvin Gaye was a very happy singer. Some people were falling asleep during his shows because how slow and bland they were. Even though they were very good, the audience wanted more. He had a relaxed smooth flow to his songs and snag from the heart. This is the music he loved and this was the music he wanted to play. He never played music for the money it was for the love he had for his music and all music. He was brought up with love never hate. Hate was a word not allowed in his household growing up and he stuck with the morals his family imbedded into his head. He lived by them and brought them out into his music. When talking about What’s Going On and looking for singers his mother was telling him its too controversial. This was not what he was going for. He was not trying to fight the man but just ask the simple question what’s going on. He was shocked that we can land on the moon but still fight each other. He could not make since of how people were being killed at war. Because of his upbringing nothing like this made sense to him. All this lead to What’s Going On. The thing that touched him most and made this song have so much meaning and heart was listening to his brother’s story of his experience in the war. All the hate valance and tragedy gave him the inspiration to put all his hear and soul into this master peace.

The world was not the only thing having trouble. His album was being shelved. No one would sell it or play it. The main reason was his wife’s brother. Marvin and him had never seen eye to eye. Marvin wanted to play what he wanted and that was not ok with his brother in law/producer. His producer went to the extreme to not let this album come out. Telling his connections with the radio to not play it. Also making it very difficult for Marvin to record this album.

The true meaning of this album was really asking the question. He knew what he wanted to make and didn’t want to compromise with anything less. Although some of the elements that made this came into play by chance. Using some players from the Liens NFL team to sing backgrounds. Although it was not really them singing but more of a chant it gave the song what it needed. Another sound that just happened to pop into the album was people smoking in a horn isolation booth in the studio. For backgrounds he also used two people singing but they were not singing together. The slight offset of the singers gave depth to the recording. As for his sax, the session was not recorded. They did not need a session due to the face the sax player was worming up and Marvin was recoding him. As he was ready to play Marvin said your free to leave we have what we need. Shocked and a little confused the sax player said he was just goofing around, Marvin replayed your goofing was perfect and just what we needed.

The main message I get out of listening to What’s Going On was peace. There was very bad things going on and all they were doing was leading to more bad things. The message needed to get out to tell the story of how the war was really affecting people and this was the way Marvin could help. It showed how a lot of people were being used and how little life was worth. It puts prospective on how many bad things there are in front of your face but anything can get twisted to seem not as bad. This album also showed me how love for your music can get things done. Marvin wanted to sign about what he could put his heart into and he did. The only thing left to say is thank you Marvin Gaye.

The Velvet Underground & Nico

Velvet Underground & Nico

The Velvet Underground was a well-known rock band of the 60s. Nico was a extraordinary vocal collaborator. They came together to make the album, The Velvet Underground & Nico. The music they made was a rock, pop, experimental sound. At this time there were very few like them. The theme for most of their songs was about controversial subjects. This album was very underground like their name stated. At the release date of their album The Velvet Underground and Nico, their sails were very low. Originally it was released in March of 1967. This album was recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol’s exploding plastic inevitable multimedia tour. After being left in the dust without anyone purchasing their album it eventually became one of the most “Influential and critically acclaimed” rock album in history. A large part of their success was due to their main songwriters Lou Reed and John Cale.

Cale and Reed Started the Velvet Underground while living together in the lower east side. They were very good friends but later would have a fall out. The reason behind the name of the album The Velvet Undergrounds and Nico was to show Nico was not a full member. Although she was not a member Lou Reed would write songs for her to sing. He would even have a relation ship with Nico for a short time. John Cale also had a relationship with the model turned actress turned singer, Nico a short time after Lou Reed and Nico had ended their relationship. By the time their next album came out there were problems all over. Nico quit and their manager, Andy Warhol was fired. John Cale did not want any of this to happen. His inspiration had a lot to do with Andy. He was the man that got them their gigs and put them on the map. Andy Put their faces to the music and made them what they were. He was their support. Their new manager had convinced Lou Reed to kick John Cale out of the band. No one in the band was happy about all of this but continued to play. After this a new more pop sound was coming out of the band.

Their sound, not understood at first became a inspiration for Glam rock, Punk, Post Punk, Gothic, and shoegasing. Their recording had all the buzz and him of their amps giving it the powerful live feel people would love and have grow on them. Its said if you would clean up the tracks and take all the “Garbage” out of the track it would completely change the song and feel. Which I strongly agree with. The reason they did not blow up like many other bands at this time was because of their freedom music. I describe it as this because when everyone would be using dances and all matching uniforms they would not participate in this because it was not them. They knew this would hurt their sales but would not change to make money, which is one of the reasons they are so admired now. Due to all their “freedom” not only with them personally but also in their music it sets them apart. Listening to them you will find yourself excited confused and amazed all at the same time. The lyrics were relatable to everyone in a different way, the music was energetic, and their personalities came out of their music. If you listen to their later material you can hear how they are trying to out due each other. You get the sense that they are falling apart in the group sense not the music. I understand why this music was, is, and will be inspirational to so many different genres of music.
